Background of the Study
Youth involvement in peacebuilding has become an essential aspect of conflict resolution and post-conflict reconstruction in many parts of Africa. In Nigeria, the role of youth in fostering peace and stability, particularly in conflict-prone areas, is increasingly recognized by both government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Jalingo Local Government Area (LGA) in Taraba State, with its diverse ethnic and religious composition, has experienced several security challenges, including ethnic clashes, religious tensions, and insurgencies. The local youth have often been caught in the crossfire of these conflicts, either as perpetrators or victims. However, youth-led peacebuilding initiatives are seen as a promising way to address these challenges and promote social cohesion.

In recent years, youth groups in Jalingo LGA have become actively involved in efforts to mediate disputes, prevent violence, and promote peaceful coexistence among different communities. These efforts have been supported by various governmental and international organizations that recognize the critical role of youth in sustainable peacebuilding. The study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of these youth-led initiatives in fostering peace, their level of participation, and the challenges they face in carrying out peacebuilding activities. It will also explore how the involvement of youth in peacebuilding efforts can be scaled and institutionalized to ensure long-term peace in the region (Hassan & Bukar, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized potential of youth in peacebuilding, their involvement in formal peace processes is often limited by lack of resources, training, and support from both governmental and non-governmental institutions. In Jalingo LGA, while there have been several youth-led initiatives aimed at promoting peace, the extent to which these initiatives have been successful remains unclear. There is also a need to explore the challenges faced by youth in peacebuilding, including lack of access to education, social exclusion, and the lack of a clear policy framework that supports youth involvement in peace efforts (Tijani & Ibraheem, 2023).

The problem the study aims to address is the lack of comprehensive evaluation of youth involvement in peacebuilding in Jalingo LGA. It will examine the contributions of youth to local peace efforts, assess the challenges they encounter, and explore ways in which these efforts can be strengthened for more significant and sustained impact.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the level of youth involvement in peacebuilding efforts in Jalingo LGA.

  2. To assess the challenges faced by youth in participating in peacebuilding activities in Jalingo LGA.

  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing the role of youth in peacebuilding in Jalingo LGA.

Research Questions

  1. To what extent have youth in Jalingo LGA been involved in peacebuilding efforts?

  2. What are the challenges faced by youth in participating in peacebuilding activities in Jalingo LGA?

  3. How can youth involvement in peacebuilding efforts be enhanced in Jalingo LGA?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Youth involvement in peacebuilding efforts in Jalingo LGA has positively contributed to reducing local conflicts.

  2. Youth in Jalingo LGA face significant challenges in participating in peacebuilding activities due to socio-economic and institutional barriers.

  3. Implementing targeted strategies will enhance youth participation and effectiveness in peacebuilding efforts in Jalingo LGA.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on youth involvement in peacebuilding efforts in Jalingo LGA, Taraba State, specifically between 2015 and 2025. It will rely on qualitative data from interviews and surveys with youth participants and peacebuilding organizations. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and challenges in accessing youth groups due to security concerns in the region.
